ABOUT
ABOUT THE PROGRAM

We are in the midst of a climate and environmental crisis that challenges not only the habitability of our planet for generations to come, but the health and survivability of people, culture and ecosystems at this
very moment. Over the course of two quarters, CJARS undertake an honest, on-the-ground assessment of the impacts of our climate emergency and related crises across our city and bioregion. We critically examine the historical and current day structures, cultural frames, norms and conditions that have created not only our climate emergency, but gross inequity across society, severe biodiversity loss, environmental
injustice, health harms, and threats to our collective and individual wellbeing. We delve into strategies and solutions to these challenges, learning from people on the ground in our local communities, and finding ways to contribute to healing and positive change.

Although much of the subject matter may seem grim, our work is filled with experiences and factors that sustain us all: purpose, connection, laughter, joy, and inspiration. There are millions of people working in small and big ways, not only to respond to our climate emergency, but to
repair and bring justice and beauty into all we do, to make this world more balanced, nourishing, equitable, compassionate, inclusive, wise and regenerative. We commit to listen, observe, read, reflect, analyze, connect, discuss and learn together in, and with members of, local communities. With the fruits of that inquiry we will process and design, create, communicate, catalyze, galvanize, invite and inspire others through our collective and individual actions. |
Through the winter and spring quarters we seek wisdom and inspiration from activists, scholars, community weavers, guardians and healers, from elders, children, animals, plants, ecosystems, diverse cultures, movements, local communities, one another and ourselves. Each of us possesses gifts, and bodies of knowledge and experience that we can tap into and share.
